 ATI Launches Line of High-Speed Graphics Chips
ATI Technologies Inc. is pulling the wraps off a new line of graphics chips for desktop computers on Tuesday, technology that works with PCI Express, a new high-speed computer connection standard. In the latest leg of a fiercely competitive race with arch rival Nvidia Corp., ATI is claiming technical superiority with its Radeon X800, Radeon X600 and Radeon X300, chips, which range from high-end to large volume, mainstream markets.
The stakes could be high as PC manufacturers move to incorporate PCI Express in coming months and then pick updated graphics cards. ATI worked on the chips for almost three years with Intel Corp. (INTC.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , which is expected to announce its PCI Express chip set later in June, the first manufacturer to use the technology. "It is pushing the envelope because it is very complex technology," ATI chief executive Dave Orton told Reuters in an interview. "We wanted to line up the transition of our new products with the transition of this new interface."

Doom 3 Interview
It's been almost four years since id Software's master programmer John Carmack announced in his .plan file that the developer's next game would be Doom 3, the next game in their first person shooter franchise that helped to define the genre in general and id in particular. Now the game is reportedly close to completion with id and its publisher Activision now stating the game will be released this summer. HomeLAN got a chance to chat with id Software CEO Todd Holleshead about the status of the game and other topics.
HomeLAN - Now that the game is heading into the home stretch, are you and the rest of id pleased with the way Doom III is coming along?
Todd Hollenshead - I'm very happy with the way the game has turned out. A few months ago, I intentionally stepped away from any play testing so that I could have a more objective look at the game later on and not get "too close" to the development. Playing through areas of the game for the first time in many months, even though I've demo'd those same levels dozens of times, I'm still caught by surprise, move with trepidation, and generally get the sh*t scared out of me on a regular basis. That's the game we set out to make when we started the project. It's taken a while to get it all done, but it's been worth it.

ATI to launch two PCI Express cards next week
In Taiwan, at COMPUTEX ATI will introduce two of its PCI Express cards.
The RV380 based card that will be called X600 from now on is a mainstream card that will occupy the sub $200 market and it based on 0.13? (micron) architecture. RV370 is ATI's first 0.11? chip, will be called the X300, will sit in the sub $100 market. We'll get back to you on clock speeds and some more details when we have them, but but both of the cards are ATX based.
Intel will follow with its own PCI Express later on and ATI won't have its stuff ready before the end of the summer, even though it already has sampled its Athlon 64/FX chipset. As for the R423/X880 XT, this card won't be introduced at this show as far as we know. The PCI Express era starts in June and will dominate over the next few years.

Half-Life 2 - It's Getting Closer
I was going to begin this article by listing all of the awards that the original Half-Life has won, but I have a word count limit on this article so let me just name one: Best Game Ever. Period.
In 1998, Valve delivered Half-Life to the world. Gordon Freeman's fight through Black Mesa and Xen was revolutionary in so many aspects: interactivity, story line, NPCs, modding and multiplayer. Did I mention multiplayer? You can't argue with the fact that there are 10 times more people playing Half-Life and its popular CounterStrike mod at any time than any other game (according to GameSpy, at this moment there are 120,276 people playing Half-Life and the next closest is Call of Duty with 12,159 players). But, after Half-Life's original release, Valve was relatively silent about a sequel until last year just before E3. They announced Half-Life 2 with a Sept 30, 2003 release date and presented their technology in closed booth demos at E3. It was huge. Amazing. Ground-breaking. The tech demo showed the physics of the game with objects that had their own mass and sound, and Gordon was sporting a gravity gun, and the graphics were leagues ahead of the others, and and and....

 Eminem to rap Apple in court
International rap star Eminem has been given the US court's go-ahead to continue his suit against Apple, its advertising agency TBWA/Chiat/Day and MTV. Though some claims in the case were disallowed the artist can press on with the suit, which alleges the defendants broke federal copyright law and falsely implied the artist had endorsed Apple's iTunes Music Store and iPod.
An MTV Apple TV advertisement in the US had featured a ten-year old singing Eminem's track, Lose Yourself. Two claims of unfair competition and unjust enrichment were rejected, reports the Detroit News. The ad was screened for three months beginning July 2003, and was also made available on Apple's Web site.

 New Half-Life Game Released
Valve have released a new 2D side-scrolling adventure 'inspired' by Half-Life and Half-Life 2. Codename Gordon, which is available to download via Steam, includes dozens of levels for players to trawl through with their tiny pixelated Gordon and features many familiar Half-Life enemies in glorious 2D. The game also includes a fully functional buggy.
Okay, so it's not exactly Half-Life 2 but, hey, it's better than nothing. Take a look at the screenshots and see what's in store.

First Look: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Late today, Rockstar gave many PlayStation 2 owners what they've been waiting for--their first glimpse of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.
A trio of images on the official San Andreas Web site seemed to confirm what many who have been following the game suspected. It will be set in modern times (not the 1970s-set game some had said) and will have a heavy West-Coast gangsta flava. The first image could be taken from any one of the many late 1980s/early 1990s gangsta films, such as Menace II Society or Colors. It depicts a quartet of corn-rowed, Uzi-toting O.G.s performing a drive-by shooting from a car from the same period.
Shot number two shows a young hood, also with an Uzi, squatting in front of a tricked out old-school convertible, often called a "hooptie" or a "hoo-ride." He is wearing what looks like a Carhartt jacket and Timberland boots--the de facto gangsta uniform circa 1994. The last shot shows the same character riding a bicycle down neighborhood straight out of Compton, with single-level homes set against a smog-colored sky. No information was released on whether bicycles can be ridden in the game.
