3Dmark05 to arrive in two weeks3Dmark05 to arrive in two weeks

It's almost finished and we managed to hear about it even though Futuremark is extremely conservative company when it comes to NDAs and information leaks.

Some initial test show that the beta favours Nvidia over ATI cards, but we've also heard the opposite. I guess we will have to wait and see who will be faster.

The developers could not wait for Shader Model 4 and Longhorn as it would take too. They went for Shader Model 3.0 and introduced a new test. After all Shader Model 3.0 is the most advanced Shader supported in DirectX 9.0c.

They waited for the new DirectX but all they got was 9.0c.

A similar thing happened years back with 3Dmark01SE when there were two versions of the same test, the one with DirectX 8.0 and the second one with ATI's DirectX8.1 support. Then, we were talking about Shader 1.1 that Nvidia adored, versus ATI's Shader 1.4

It's funny to remember that Nvidia's key argument at that time against Shader model 1.4 was that it would render a scene in less passes and would end up faster while the picture quality would be the same as on 1.1.

History repeats itself, but this time the tables have turned.

Half-Life 2 (not) gold MondayHalf-Life 2 (not) gold Monday

Valve impostor drops a golden bomb on the Half-Life 2 Fallout forums; stalwart site operators get to the bottom of the hoax.

The long, dramatic saga of Half-Life 2's development cycle may finally be coming to a close. Earlier this evening, Gabe Newell, the head of Valve Software, left a short but sweet post on the HL2Fallout.com forums, simply stating "We're going gold Monday..."

Earlier this week, Valve began preloading the highly-anticipated game through the company's Steam service. The only files that were uploaded were "set-in-stone" items, such as audio, textures and the like. But, if the game is indeed going gold as of this Monday, it could mean that a full, purchasable version of Half-Life 2 could be available practically as early as next week.

Doom 3 ReviewDoom 3 Review

After some waiting, Doom 3 finally comes out, and shows why it was delayed. Doom 3 gets five stars for it's remarkable 3D graphics. The gameplay is a little confusing in the beginning, but it gets easier after a while of running around. Doom 3 gives you a good first impression, but after a while you know the real deal.

Doom 3 is a remake of the original Doom, but with monsters from Doom and Doom 2. The game starts out as you being a marine on Mars in the 22nd century and working for Union Aerospace Corporation, also known as UAC. You'll have to fight back against the enemies using pistol, shotgun, machinegun, gernades, plasma gun and various other weapons. Your enemies can come from random places where it is easier to take you out. Doom 3 starts out scary, but after a while it gets predictable.

NVIDIA Hints at SLI Chipset PlansNVIDIA Hints at SLI Chipset Plans

Amid the hubbub over the introduction of the GeForce 6600 line and the GeForce 6600GT's ability to work in an SLI configuration, folks from NVIDIA were dropping hints like mad at Quakecon about the company's plans for its next-gen Athlon 64 chipset with PCI Express support. NVIDIA is obviously working on a north bridge chip that will allow dual PCI Express graphics slots, and the company is confidently predicting SLI performance markedly superior to the dual Xeon-based motherboards that are powering the first SLI demo systems.

Ati Cat 4.8's ReleasedAti Cat 4.8's Released

Performance:
As with most CATALYST(tm) releases performance has increased in various situations. The following performance gains are noticed:

-Direct3D driver efficiency has improved considerably. Significant performance gains are noted in multiple "CPU-bound" cases, including 3DMark2001, Aquamark 3, Comanche4, Dungeon Siege, and Unreal Tournament 2003 and 2004. Typical improvements are in the 1-5% range.

-OpenGL driver efficiency is also improved. Older OpenGL games such as Quake III Arena and Wolfenstein - Enemy Territory show small improvement (1-2%) at low resolutions. Call of Duty framerates are up approximately 4%. Doom3 improves considerably more (as much as 12% on some product configurations) as a result of the same software efficiency improvements.

Features:

Geometry Instancing:
This new feature provides assistance when a game has to render many objects where the geometry is highly similar. Geometry Instancing allows the VPU to create multiple objects from a single geometric model, rather than passing an entire new model for each item on the screen. This increases the rendering speed of images such as leaves, or grass.

VPU Recover Enhancement:
VPU Recover has been improved in this release of CATALYST. In most cases, VPU Recover will fully recover instead of switching to software rendering mode. This enhancement is supported under the Windows XP operating system.

EIA 861B Timing Specification:
This release of CATALYST? introduces EIA 861B Timing Specification for DVI based televisions. The RADEON? Software Release version 8.04 will support 256 byte E-EDID and will decode CEA timing extensions. Further, it will retrieve DTV timing information. When the driver detects EIA 861B timings in E-EDID that the controller cannot handle, it will replace the EDID detail timing with adjusted timings suitable to our controller. The modes will be added as EDID detailed timing.
