Sober worm variant makes the roundsSober worm variant makes the rounds

A new variant of the mass-mailing Sober worm has been discovered and is spreading among consumer PC users.

Sober.P, which operates in a similar fashion to other Sober worms, uses a subject header in an e-mail to try to entice people into opening an attachment. The virus then harvests e-mail addresses from the victim and directs a barrage of spam to those addresses.

"The social engineering has been very effective," said Craig Schmugar, virus research manager for McAfee Avert. "They will use German messages for German Windows users. They tell them they've won tickets to the World Cup, and that has been an effective (ploy) for that region."

According to the knowledge base article at Microsoft, this is caused by the MPEG4 codec, sometimes using invalid motion vectors.

Silver slimline PStwo to launch in the UK on May 13Silver slimline PStwo to launch in the UK on May 13

Sony has confirmed that a silver version of its slimline PStwo will be in the shops next month - with the new version of the hardware set to launch on May 13th, the day Microsoft's Xbox 360 MTV special will be shown in Europe. The new design will launch with an RRP of ?114.99, ten pounds more expensive than the normal black version of the slimline PS2.

Sony has denied that the launch date has been deliberately planned to spoil the Xbox 360 launch; when asked by our sister site Eurogamer whether the date clash was more than just a coincidence, a Sony representative stated: "Absolutely not."

Rumours of a silver PStwo first emerged back in January, when Argos began displaying a product page complete with picture, but the listing was quickly taken down once the link began to circulate amongst gaming sites.

The launch can be seen as further proof that Sony intends to extend the life cycle of its current console for as long as possible, as it did with the PSone. Its next-generation machine will go on show for the first time at next month's E3, and isn't expected to launch until 2006.

Valve and VU end legal dispute, publishing agreementValve and VU end legal dispute, publishing agreement

Parties settle longstanding beef out of court--as of August, VUG will no longer distribute any Valve titles, and cyber cafe rights revert to the developer.

In August of 2002, Valve took dispute with then Sierra Online over cyber cafe distribution rights to Federal District Court in Washington State. Today, in a joint statement, the two warring factions said they had settled their differences out of court. In a court order signed by presiding Federal Judge Thomas Zilly on April 12, 2005, Valve's Motion for Order to Dismiss with Prejudice was granted. Judge Zilly's signed order made the lengthy legal dispute moot.

New Unreal Tournament detailsNew Unreal Tournament details

Details of the new Unreal Tournament title have been revealed in the latest issue of US magazine Computer Gaming World. The game, which will be powered by the Unreal Engine 3, is being designed with the aim of putting gameplay ahead of graphics in the development process, with art being added in only once map layouts are finalised.

No specific details of vehicles have been released, but images suggest there will be a next generation Goliath tank and scorpion buggy. A total of 11 weapons will reportedly be available. The game will feature voice-controlled AI and game modes including Onslaught, Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. There will also be a global ratings system in place so clans around the world can compare scores. But most interesting is of all is the new Conquest mode. It features eight teams, each with unique armour, who can battle it out on maps up to three times the size of Onslaught equivalents.

Forums Status UpdateForums Status Update

The news is not good. After two days of trying to resurrect the HDD it still refuses to give up the goods. So I have decided to go with the stuff that I managed to salvage.

As it turns out the backup I have is a lot older than at first appeared (looks like it is from around September 2004) I will be putting in place a sql backup from around December. Any posts made since then have gone, for good. Also you may find many of the with images attached will have the images missing.

All I can say is that I am very sorry, and we will be using a more robust method of backup from now on.

DLC Website(s) UpdateDLC Website(s) Update

Okay we have found a backup of the databse for the forums dated Feb 2005. I will be attempting to get the forums back up today and tomorrow.

However, we have also sent the 'dead' hard drive off to a data recovery company who may be able to retrieve the latest databse prior to the hdd failure. So in the meantime, once I have the forums up and running I will then close them again, until we have had confirmation that all is lost.

Website OutagesWebsite Outages

You will probably have noticed by now that our sites have been down since around midnight last night (26/03/05) This has been caused by major hardware failure on one of main servers. This site is currenlty being hosted on a secondary server, and will continue to be so for the next wee or so or until we are able to retrieve the information from our primary server.

Please bear with us until we are able to return things to normal.

The worst case scenario will be that all forum posts made after 9/12/04 will be lost unless we are able to recover a more recent backup.

The forums will return once we have verified we have al the data necessary.

I will posting news on our progress as and when here.

Thanks
